Over the last decade, we served over 22,000 clients, providing at least 8,000 of them with direct legal representation at a hearing or in court.
In 2014, our dedicated team of attorneys, advocates and researchers:
- Provided legal services to over 1,000 New York City Public Housing residents enduring black mold, lead paint and other toxic living conditions
- Connected 3,000 families with nutritional assistance, entitlements, and adequate shelter
- Returned at least $2 million in benefits to our clients to help them feed their families and avoid homelessness
- Drove the national conversation on poverty with original research, high-profile events, and press coverage in two dozen media outlets
We also strengthen the safety net using impact litigation, original research, and policymaking efforts. Our advocacy coalition introduced three new bills in the New York State legislature, put an end to dehumanizing policies at the Human Resources Administration, and testified at a half-dozen New York City Council hearings.
Though we celebrate our victories, we know that the fight is far from over. Our team will not give up until social safety net services are widely known, easily accessible, and promptly delivered with the same civility offered to those who can afford to pay for professional help.
